Embracing the Challenge: The True Nature of Work in IT

I wrote this blog post exactly one year on from my first day at IT Works and what a journey it has been this year gone by and those that came before it!

Growing up in the remote and rural areas of South Australia (Yes, I’m an Aussie – shhh!😜) modern technology wasn’t exactly at my doorstep.

It was more of a distant echo, one that sparked a curiosity and led me on a path of discovery and learning.

This journey from a young adult, fascinated by the scarce technology around me, to my growing IT roles before landing at IT Works just on a year ago, has been nothing short of a thrilling climb.

Each step up the metaphorical mountain has taught me the value of perseverance, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

The oft-quoted maxim “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life” paints an overly simplistic picture of the working world.

While finding joy in your job is undeniably crucial for maintaining job satisfaction and a strong work ethic, it’s important to acknowledge that work, by its very essence, involves overcoming challenges and completing tasks for which we are compensated. This is particularly true in the field of IT, where the complexity of the tasks and the necessity for constant learning and adaptation can make work feel very much like… well, work.

However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t find profound satisfaction in the hurdles we clear and the solutions we devise.
Indeed, it’s the pursuit of excellence and the love of a good challenge that lends work its true value.

Now, as I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of a Māori Whakataukī (proverb) I was enlightened with a few years back;

“Whaia te iti kahurangi ki te tuohu koe me he maunga teitei,”

Pursue that which you treasure; should you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain

It speaks to the pursuit of our most cherished goals with determination, even if it means facing formidable mountains, which resonates deeply with my own experiences. An English proverb of similar meaning is “Shoot for the stars and you might hit the moon“.

This is not a quote of compromise, rather is to set your goals high and even if you don’t quite make them your progress and growth will still be great. Proverbs such as these have been a guiding principle in my career, especially in the dynamic field of IT.

I’ve come to appreciate the logical structure of technology and the limitless potential it holds for creative problem-solving.

The challenges I face daily aren’t just hurdles to clear; they’re opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate.

My passion lies in tackling these challenges head-on, finding new ways to overcome limitations, and continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in IT.

My approach to work in IT is deeply rooted in a philosophy of looking beyond the surface.

It’s not just about fixing what’s broken but understanding the why and the how—digging deep to uncover the root causes of issues and conceptualising comprehensive solutions.

This mindset has led me to question even the most established processes and explore the transformative potential of modern technologies like AI and machine learning.

In an ever-evolving industry, I’m convinced that we must remain adaptable, always on the lookout for more efficient and effective ways to achieve our objectives.

As a senior engineer at IT Works, my diverse role allows me to engage with a wide array of challenges and projects.

From assisting in revitalising our company website to spearheading innovations in our managed voice platforms, my days are filled with varied tasks that test my skills and push me to expand my knowledge.

Despite being relatively new to the company, my extensive background in varied IT roles has equipped me with a unique perspective and a rich reservoir of experiences to draw from.

Whether I’m supporting our frontline teams or directly solving problems for our clients, the joy of my work lies in making a tangible difference and contributing to our collective success.

This journey has taught me the importance of viewing challenges not as obstacles but as stepping stones towards greater achievements.

I encourage my colleagues and anyone navigating the complexities of the IT landscape to adopt a proactive stance—always aiming to identify and resolve the underlying issues that hinder progress.

As we continue to embrace new technologies and refine our processes, let’s remember that the “best” way of doing something is only as good as our next discovery.

Our pursuit of excellence is a never-ending climb, but with determination and a collaborative spirit, we can reach new heights and achieve our loftiest goals.

I invite you to join me in this exciting and ongoing journey of innovation and improvement.

At IT Works, we’re more than just a team; we’re a community of forward-thinkers dedicated to leveraging technology for a brighter, more efficient future.

Together, let’s explore the boundless possibilities that lie ahead, armed with the knowledge that every challenge we face is an opportunity to learn, grow, and soar to new heights.

Get in touch and we can look at what the future may hold in store.
