Cloud migration

Moving to the cloud without the horror stories

We move email, files and servers into Microsoft 365 and Azure for New Zealand organisations, with the preparation beforehand that makes the move itself uneventful.

Why it matters

The move is the easy part. The preparation decides how it goes.

Almost every migration that goes badly went badly before anyone pressed anything. Permissions nobody had mapped, mailboxes larger than expected, a line of business application quietly depending on a server everyone forgot about.

We spend most of the effort up front, finding those things while they are still cheap to deal with. The cutover then tends to be the dull part, which is exactly what you want from it.

What we move

Email, files, servers and the things attached to them

Into Microsoft 365 and Azure, or a mix of cloud and on-premises where that genuinely suits you better.

Email and mailboxes

From Google Workspace, hosted Exchange, another Microsoft tenant or an on-premises server. Calendars, contacts and shared mailboxes included, not just the inbox.

Files and network drives

Old shared drives into SharePoint and OneDrive with version history and access control intact, rather than folders tipped into the cloud and sorted out later.

Servers and applications

Lift and shift into Azure, or a rebuild where the old server was holding something together that should not have been. We are honest about which is which.

Identity and access

Moving accounts into Entra ID with multi-factor authentication and conditional access in place from day one, so security improves through the migration rather than after it.

Phone systems

Where the move is a good moment to leave an old PBX behind, we can bring voice across at the same time.

Backup from day one

A cloud tenant is not backed up by default. Protection is in place before the migration completes, not added later.

How it runs

How a migration actually runs

Five stages, and you will know which one you are in at any point.

1. Discovery

What you have, where it lives, how big it is and what depends on it. This is where the surprises turn up, and it is much better that they turn up here.

2. Preparation

Cleaning up data, mapping permissions, deciding structure and fixing what should not travel. The least visible stage and the one that decides the outcome.

3. Pilot

A small group moves first, works normally for a week and tells us what feels wrong. Cheaper to learn on ten people than on two hundred.

4. Cutover

Usually over a weekend. Data is pre-staged so the final sync is short, and someone is on hand Monday morning rather than back at their desk waiting for tickets.

5. Aftercare

The fortnight afterwards matters. Permissions get tuned, stragglers get found and people get shown the things that are now easier.

Common questions

Questions we get asked about cloud migration

Short answers. Ask us for the longer ones.

Will we lose email during the move?

No. Mail flows throughout. Data is pre-staged and synced ahead of the cutover, so the final switch is short and nothing sits in limbo waiting for it.

What happens to our old file structure?

We map it before we move it. Some of it comes across as-is, some gets tidied where a structure has grown by accident over fifteen years. You decide which, with a recommendation from us.

Can you move us if we have no in-house IT?

Yes, and most of our migration clients do not have in-house IT. We handle the technical work and the communication to your team, which is usually the part people underestimate.

How much downtime should we expect?

For a typical Microsoft 365 move, none during the week and a few hours over a weekend. Server migrations vary more, and we give you a realistic window rather than an optimistic one.

Next step

Thinking about a move?

The useful first step is a look at what you have now: where the data sits, who has access, and what would need to happen before anything moved. No obligation to go anywhere with it.
